SUSSEX SENIORS WIN SOUTHERN COUNTIES FOURSOMES TROPHY
This year’s Southern Counties Foursomes Qualifier was hosted by Surrey County golf at West Byfleet Golf Club. The winners qualify for the regional finals.
Sussex has enjoyed some success in this event over recent years, qualifying for the finals in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023 and now again in 2024. Sussex have also won the Regional Finals in 2018 and 2019.
This qualifying event at West Byfleet was played in warm weather without too much breeze. The course is a stern challenge from the back tee markers with many long par 4 holes.
As is often the case the event was well contested by Surrey, Hampshire and Bucks, Berks & Oxon. After lunch the scores were very close with Sussex on 3 points out of 5, Surrey and Hampshire on 2 ½ with BB&O on 2. Martin Galway and Matt Allen had a notable victory of 6&5 in the morning against two Surrey West Byfleet members.
With scores so tight there was all to play for in the afternoon. As the rounds progressed Sussex and Surrey were both in a position to win. As is often the case in these events the final result came down to the last match on the course. Sussex had by this time won 3 out of the 4 matches completed. Playing the 18th hole all square after a very tough match, Steve Graham and Jim Banting birdied the last hole to secure the point leaving Sussex as overall winners on 7 points. Sussex now go forward to the Regional Finals to be held at Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club https://www.westonsupermaregolfclub.com/
on 19th September 2024.
