Sussex’s Senior Men’s team produced an outstanding week of golf at Harrogate Golf Club, finishing third overall at the England Golf Senior Men’s County Finals after a tense final day that saw all four counties start level on match points.
The Sussex side battled hard across three days of competition, showing consistency, teamwork, and resilience against the country’s strongest senior teams. On the final day, Sussex faced eventual champions Lincolnshire in a closely fought match that came down to the wire.
There were plenty of memorable moments throughout the week – not least from Pyecombe’s Martin Galway, who was competing in his fifth Senior Men’s County Finals. Martin’s incredible unbeaten run of 22 matches finally came to an end in heartbreaking fashion, despite producing a superb birdie on the last hole that his opponent matched to claim victory by the narrowest of margins.
Reflecting on the team’s efforts, Emma Whitlock, County Secretary of Sussex County Golf, said:
“Our seniors should be really proud of what they achieved at Harrogate. To finish third in such a strong field is a brilliant result and shows the depth of quality and spirit within the Sussex team. Their commitment and camaraderie throughout the week were fantastic – they’ve represented the county with real pride.”
