Seniors Foursomes Final at Swaffham Golf Club
The Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes Final was held yesterday (Thursday) at Swaffham Golf Club in Norfolk, with a hard-fought contest played in great spirit between Norfolk, Somerset, and Kent. The format saw each county field a 10-man side, competing as five foursomes pairs.
The Team:
Jason Turner (Ham Manor) + Mark Buss (East Brighton)
Arwel Roberts (Dyke) + Scott Williams (Worthing)
Martin Galway (Pyecombe) + Trevor Greenfield (Pyecombe)
Colin Jones (West Sussex) + Andy Barnes (Pyecombe)
Dean Manning (Copthorne) + John Newsome (Crowborough Beacon)
Captain - Colin Jones
After a tense morning session, we stood in contention with three points out of five, a solid return that kept us in the hunt. Norfolk however looked in commanding form at that stage, posting an impressive four-and-a-half points out of five creating a large lead early on.
The afternoon matches brought a dramatic swing in fortunes. Norfolk, despite their strong start, managed to add just one point, while both Kent and our side rallied with three points apiece. That left the final outcome to be decided on holes won against Kent, where our team came through superbly with a total of 23 holes up across the board with some impressively large wins.
This was a particularly sweet success for the side as it’s the third year in a row we’ve reached the final, having been edged out last year on holes won. This time, though, it was finally our year.
On top of that achievement, we’re also preparing for another big occasion: the England Golf Seniors Six-Man Final in Harrogate in two weeks’ time. With one win already in the bag, the team can head north full of confidence and determination. A huge thank you to the Swaffham Golf Club for presenting a brilliant course and to all our opponents for creating a tight and enjoyable competition.
